VINTAGE 50s MARX TOY BATTLE OF THE BLUE AND GRAY SERIES 3000 CIVIL WAR PLAY SET

This is an original, vintage play set, made by MARX in 1958 or 1959. The box reads: BATTLE Of The BLUE And GRAY...

Marx made several versions of this U. Civil War set, in the fifties & sixties, but THIS "SERIES 3000" is the FIRST or EARLIEST version. THIS SET IS NOT COMPLETE AND HAS MANY BROKEN PARTS. It is MISSING the tin litho house, although the plastic front porch is present. This set was probably stored in an attic or garage, with years of extreme heat / cold, which has made the soldiers brittle.

Many of the soldiers have damage. They must have made the blue figures slightly different from the gray ones: VIRTUALLY EVERY BLUE (UNION) SOLDIER IS BROKEN or DAMAGED.

3 of the Union soldiers - seated, or in the riding position, are a slightly different color, and are not damaged. Several of the gray (Confederate) soldiers have damage to their weapons, but about 1/2 of them are NOT damaged. The instructions are present, but have significant insect damage and are badly torn. There are 8 horses - but 2 of them have damaged tails. There are 2 small tents - both have cracks.

The figures of Lincoln, Grant and Lee are present, and are NOT damaged. There is 1 black cannon, 1 silver canon, 1 caisson (slight damage) 1 hard plastic bridge, 2 green trees. Most of the original Marx paper bags are present, but so badly damaged that have virtually no collectible value. There are several small, loose accessories: 4 canteens, 2 pairs of binoculars, 3 belts w scabbards, 2 shoulder bags, 3 belts with holsters, drum, and lots of hard plastic accessories: barrel, rocks, crate, table, crate of rifles, stool and a few other "doo-dads" - see the pictures.

The rebel flag is present, but broken at the base. The Union flag is present, and looks to have been glued into the base. The GOOD NEWS: the box is pretty nice.

I would call it VERY GOOD - maybe better. It is slightly discolored with age. The 2 front corners are partly split at the seam. There is a small (match head sized) puncture in the center of the box top, and 3 or 4 similar small punctures, on the UNDERSIDE of the box. For the MOST part, the box does not have serious damage.

The BOX AND SMALL ACCESSORIES ARE THE REAL PRIZE HERE. And make a very nice set with this box. The box is LARGE, and measures over 29 inches long by 15 inches wide, and is 4 inches deep.

REMEMBER: ALL BUT 3 OF THE UNION SOLDIERS ARE DAMAGED. Lastly: when you open the box, you'll find the contents have a "waxy" smell - like old crayons on a hot day. I'm here to help!
