The Marx Toy Company was started by Louis Marx with his brother David in 1919 and in the beginning produced a plethora of typically "tin type" toys i. Including train sets until WWII.
Their corporate ethos from the beginning was to sell high quality toys at reasonable prices. After the war he got into the "plastic" revolution and the molded figure business. Originally 60mm size figurines of amazingly realistic medieval figures, politicians, historical warriors, Western TV show characters, and later Disney storybook figures were produced for children. Later sizes were adjusted to 54mm and then to HO scale, mainly to cut down on the cost of play sets. Marx's figures were available in dime stores and Christmas catalogs of famous retailers Sears, Montgomery Ward, J.Into the mid 1960's. He produced his toys in three main factories in the eastern US, with others in.
None of his four children were interested in succeeding him and continuing the business. The last Marx factory closed its doors in 1979, and all assets were liquidated in the early 1980's. Louis Marx died in 1982 at 85.
This is a RARE find of a 1961 Disneykins 1st Series Store Display. All 34 figures are in mint condition, but the Display itself has been altered by a previous owner, hence the MYSTERY? Someone used an X-acto knife to very carefully cut away the blue top of the Display with the 15 cent advertisement.
And, who would paint mostly small white splotches on the grey Display board that look like "clouds"? A collector would have wanted it to look as new as possible. My guess is that a retail store owner did it to look different from a Display in a competitor's store and better catch the attention of young kids.
The cardboard in the Display is in EM condition, except for the alterations. It has no loose pieces or places where the cardboard has been water stained during its life. It looks basically brand new. Please closely examine the photos as they are a big part of the condition description. Other current listings are either missing figures and/or have age related wear issues with the cardboard itself. I have been collecting Marx figures for the past five years fairly aggressively. As I first got into the Presidents, my interest quickly spread, due to my fascination with history. I bought more and more lesser known but interesting categories of items. So, if you have interest in. History, Medieval Times, Military and Political leaders and rarities, please keep an eye out for new listings under my name.
