The Marx Pet Shop playset was the first playset designed for both boys and girls. It was not very popular, and as a result was not available for very long, hence it's hard to find today. Many of the individual pieces included in the Pet Shop playset were exclusive to this playset, like the red birds and bunnies.
Plus, there are 2 different Pet Shop playsets, 4209 and 4210. The only difference is the 4210 set includes the 4 people from the Doll House playset Mom, Dad, boy, & girl. This playset is the 4210, with the 4 figures, in the original bag stamped with the Marx logo and the word "PEOPLE" [see pics above]. The 4210 playset like this is the harder of the 2 to find. This complete playset is so rare that the major websites devoted to Marx playsets don't have the photographs for the small pieces used only in the Pet Shop playset.
That's right, the experts & serious collectors can't even find photographs of these special pieces. We have this week taken detailed photos of the missing pieces, and will be providing them to the excellent Marx playset website run by Eric Johns. Now about those little paper bags; Marx playsets had many small pieces.
To manage all these thousands of different small pieces, & insure the right parts got placed in the right playset box, Marx used paper bags to keep track of small groups of pieces needed for playsets. The Pet Shop has 6 different bag sets, and this playset has all 6 bags & contents. This playset is 100% complete. Even the main box is in beautiful condition. The only real marks are on the top from where Marx used masking tape to seal the box! It's parts are as they were when assembled into a playset. Now that said, there are 2 sheet metal parts that have some warpage, they are the roof assembly, and the front wall. The roof has some waves and creases, and the front wall has more warpage. This happened because there are some curved parts to the front wall, and during the stamping process, the metal didn't fold as expected. This may explain why this playset was never assembled. That said, the warpage is not so bad that it cannot be assembled, it's just got some waviness. And if we had to hazard a guess, we suspect all these playset front walls had this problem to a varying degree. You can see some of the warpage on the red roof section in the photos. I can also provide more detailed pictures of these 2 panels [or any of the other pieces] if you send us a message requesting more photos of specific parts. All the other metal pieces are dent and scratch free. About our price: This is one of [if not THE] rarest of the Marx playsets, and to find one that is 100% complete and has never been played with or assembled, is almost impossible. We can only find one other website that lists the Marx Pet Shop playset as being for sale. It too is a never played with, never assembled 100% complete playset. But it's still for sale!
